DECEMBER 2012 PREMIERE HIGHLIGHTS

OUTBACK HUNTERS

In the Northern Territory of the Australian Outback lies 2,000 miles of merciless terrain known as the Top End. In this hunter vs. hunted frontier, the top of the food chain belongs to the saltwater crocodile. The largest and most deadly reptile on Earth, these savage creatures can reach 21 feet and over 2,000 lbs. And the bigger they get, the bigger they eat. With the dry season beginning, crocs are on the move, and attacks on people and livestock are escalating. For twelve weeks, a rare breed of men will risk everything to stop them. Using hand-thrown harpoons, crocodile hunters battle these deadly beasts to protect their families, their community, and their livelihood. Earning most of the year’s income in these few months, the men put everything on the line knowing that every fight could be their last. In a place where crocodiles outnumber humans 3 to 1, if you're not the hunter, you're the hunted.

AMERICAN PICKERS:

FULL STEAM AHEAD

After taking a joyride on a rare hundred-year-old monster tractor, Mike and his brother Robbie take to a property packed with amazing steam engines and rusty relics.   In Washington State, Robbie's bid on some heavy machinery leads to a high stakes lumberjack competition. Later, the guys head to Whidbey Island and find a graveyard of car grills and a 1947 Chevy pickup.

Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz – business partners in Iowa-based Antique Archaeology and friends since the 8th grade – are part sleuths, part antiques experts, and part cultural historians.  They call themselves "pickers" because their job is to pick through backyard junk piles, abandoned barns and neglected garages scattered across the back roads of America looking for hidden collectibles they can make a buck on.  But even if they don’t close a deal, they are enriched with fascinating stories about the stuff and the American characters who have spent a lifetime collecting it. The series follows the adventures of Mike and Frank on their mission to pick "rusty gold" before flea market dealers and antique shop owners get to it.

I LOVE THE 1880S:

MILITARY MADNESS

We’re taking aim at the subject of war. We’ve enlisted a platoon of comedians to crack wise about history’s weirdest weapons, craziest generals, and biggest battlefield blunders. Learn the secrets behind the CIA’s classified cat-training program. Discover William Wallace’s taste for human flesh. And go deep inside the mind of George “Blood and Guts” Patton. It’s a walk through military history. Without the risk of getting trench foot.

I LOVE THE 1880s takes a comedic look back at history's most iconic people and events through the eyes of today's funniest comedians. The series will feature surprising information and offer a nostalgic look back at "simpler times."  I LOVE THE 1880s will tie historical material to current headlines, illustrating that history truly does repeat itself –  usually in absurdly funny ways.

MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US:

NEW WORLD

NEW WORLD: The Aztecs have built a mighty empire that dominates Central America. But it will be destroyed because of a domino effect.  7,000 miles away in modern-day Turkey, the great trading center of Constantinople is overrun by an Islamic army. Europeans race to find a new route to the spice-rich East. Instead, Christopher Columbus lands in America – and discovers gold. Within 30 years the Aztecs will be conquered. In the Andes, the Spanish open up the largest silver mine in the world – and mint millions of pesos de ocho (pieces of eight). These coins transform the global economy. They fill the treasure chests of pirates. They fuel a stock market boom. They help pay for the Taj Mahal. As trade booms, millions of people come to the New World as slaves. But a handful of Pilgrims come as pioneers – looking for freedom.

From the producers of America the Story of Us comes the epic tale of the rise of civilization – this is the “Story of Us” gone global. Narrated by Josh Brolin, MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US is not simply names and dates from history; there will be danger, action, struggle, heroism and adrenaline.  This 12-hour series takes us from the first flourishing of civilization in Mesopotamia through to the discovery of America, not only immersing the viewer in the rise and fall of the world's greatest societies, but also revealing the incremental milestones that led to our modern world – from creating an alphabet to domesticating crops.

MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US:

REVOLUTIONS

REVOLUTIONS: Mankind embarks on a new age of exploration, and tames the wilderness. In North America, Siberia and Australia, ancient traditions are swept away in the name of commerce and science. Within a hundred years, the irrational fear that produced a witch trial in Salem gives way to a very rational cry for freedom. American revolutionaries confront a mighty empire. The Industrial Revolution replaces muscle power with machines, freeing Mankind from nature’s limits. But our oldest foe – disease – thrives in industrial cities. With the American Civil War, the two revolutions collide. The world’s first industrial war, it is a battle to define “freedom.”

MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US:

NEW FRONTIERS

NEW FRONTIERS: The end of the Civil War allows Mankind to go into overdrive. This is an age of innovation, transformation and mass production. People believe that “Anything, everything, is possible.” Japan goes from feudal society to industrial superpower within 50 years.  But progress has its dark side.  The demand for rubber devastates Africa.  And the desire to build bigger, faster, better leads to a titanic disaster…Mankind takes on godlike powers: to feed billions of people, reshape the landscape, re-engineer the human body. The greatest power of all was unleashed over Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. Since entering the Atomic Age we’ve been living between eternity and oblivion. But at the same time, we’ve become more connected as a species. 100,000 years ago there were a few thousand hunter-gatherers on the African savannah. Today there are 7 billion of us in every corner of the globe. It’s been an amazing journey.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS

France's Chauvet Cave is the home of uncharacteristically large and spectacular cave paintings that are a true capsule of prehistoric civilization and is almost always locked. Until now…

The cave is an untouched shrine to pre-history. The soft, clay-like floor retains the paw prints of pre-historic cave bears along with large, rounded, depressions that are believed to be the "nests" where the bears slept. Historically off-limits to visitors and cameras, exclusive access has been granted to one of the world's greatest filmmakers Werner Herzog. Within a limited shoot window beginning in mid-February through March of 2010, Herzog will capture the hidden depths of this cave for this dynamic feature documentary: CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS.

Hundreds of animal paintings have been catalogued in the cave, depicting at least 13 different species, including some never before seen in other ice age paintings. Rather than depicting only the familiar animals of the hunt that predominate in Paleolithic cave art, (i.e. horses, cattle, reindeer, etc.) the walls of the Chauvet Cave are covered with predatory animals: lions, panthers, bears, owls, rhinos and hyenas.

Excitement over the long-awaited arrival of the excavator is short-lived when a massive falling tree nearly crushes several crewmembers to death.  Tempers flare and the camp is thrown into chaos.

A group of eight unemployed Alabama construction workers are about to take one last shot at the American dream in BAMAZON. After laying off all of his employees in the recession, contractor Tim Evans will re-hire a group of his trusted brothers, and lead them deep into the most dangerous corner of the Amazon jungle in a search for gold.  The quest for riches in this area goes back centuries to the legend of El Dorado, but there has never been a mission like this. Using American know-how and Southern ingenuity, the crew will move hundreds of tons of machinery across miles of treacherous, impenetrable jungle terrain. They’ll battle jaguars, venomous snakes, and each other in order to find gold and change their lives forever.
